As we saw in Part 1, sustainable development comprises three spheres: economic, social, and environmental. In Part 2, let’s look at how to make a tourist event more sustainable in the social sphere.

Actions to take within the team

It is recommended to involve employees in an eco-responsible approach. They will feel more valued, increasing their motivation and sense of belonging.

Raising employee awareness of best practices and sharing success stories in sustainable development is another step. Indeed, your employees are the best ambassadors for the project and can talk about it around them.

Create an environment committee for recurring events so that you can regularly follow up on project progress.
Finally, drafting and internally circulating a policy for organizing and holding eco-responsible events is one of the best practices in setting up eco-responsible events. A formal, written policy gains more visibility and credibility.

Actions to take toward customers

Choose a venue accessible to everyone, particularly those with reduced mobility, to become a more inclusive event. So consider wheelchair-accessible entrances, strollers, and accessible washrooms for people with reduced mobility, which is an added advantage.

Have attendees fill out a satisfaction survey online in the days following the event, to continuously improve. It will be fresh in participants’ minds, and you’ll be more likely to get relevant feedback to enhance the event for its next edition.

Lastly, communicate your achievements to attendees, such as the fact that you have bike racks, that you offer shuttle services, that you have parking spaces reserved for carpooling, or that you managed to divert a certain amount of waste from landfill, etc.
